Key Stage 4 External Examinations

GCSE Examinations at Sir William Stanier School

GCSE examinations mark the culmination of Key Stage 4 and play an important role in pupils’ progression to post-16 education, apprenticeships and future careers.

At Sir William Stanier School, we are committed to ensuring that all examinations are conducted fairly, securely and in line with national regulations.

Accredited Examination Centre

We are an accredited examination centre and follow all guidance set by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).

This ensures that:

  • Examinations are administered securely

  • National regulations are followed

  • Access arrangements are applied appropriately

  • Pupils are treated fairly and consistently

Supporting Pupils for Success

Our staff work closely with pupils to ensure they are well prepared for external examinations.

This includes:

  • Structured revision guidance

  • Mock examinations

  • Access to past papers and exam practice

  • Intervention and support sessions

  • Appropriate access arrangements where required

We aim to create a calm and supportive environment that helps pupils approach examinations with confidence.

Exam Timetables

The full GCSE examination timetable is published nationally each year.

Individual pupil timetables are issued in advance of the examination period, after February half term. Families and students are encouraged to review these carefully and ensure pupils are available for all scheduled examinations.

Further information, including updates and key guidance, will be shared with pupils and parents at the appropriate time during the academic year.

Our Commitment

Sir William Stanier School is committed to ensuring equitable access to examinations for all pupils.

Access arrangements are put in place to remove barriers to assessment for pupils with additional needs, including SEND, medical conditions or specific learning difficulties. All arrangements are implemented in line with Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations and the Equality Act 2010.

What Are Access Arrangements?

Access arrangements are adjustments made before examinations to reduce substantial disadvantage, without giving an unfair advantage or compromising the integrity of the assessment.

They must reflect a pupil’s normal way of working in school.

Examples may include:

  • Extra time

  • Reader or computer reader

  • Scribe

  • Word processor

  • Rest breaks

  • Modified papers

How Decisions Are Made

Access arrangements are considered based on:

  • Teacher evidence

  • Standardised assessments

  • Prior attainment data

  • Evidence of normal way of working

  • External professional advice (where appropriate)

Private reports may contribute to the evidence base but do not automatically entitle a pupil to an arrangement.

All approved arrangements are held on file and may be inspected by awarding bodies.
